BIRD
WATCHING
Nova
Scotia is one of the best birding locations in Canada and Shelburne
County is one of the best locations in Nova Scotia. About 440
species have been recorded in Nova Scotia. Shelburne County
offers pelagic birding at its best. Birders coming to
Shelburne
County should expect the unexpected year round. Many birds
gather
in the area in large numbers. Shore birds and sea birds
gather in
abundance, especially in the fall. Here are some of the birds
visitors will find of interest: Ipswich Savannah Sparrow, Boreal
Cickadee, Dickcissel, Gray Jay, a variety of gulls, Shearwaters,
Jaegars, Dovekie, Northern Fulmar, Buff Breasted Sandpiper, Harequin
Duck and Snowy Owl.
Cape
Sable Island qualifies as an important bird area and no other IBA site
in the Maritimes has so many species (5 in total) that meet the IBA
criteria: the Atlanitc Brant (globally significant), the Semipalmated
Sandpiper (globally significant), the Semipalmated Plover (globally
significant), the Short-Billed Dowitcher, (globally significant) and
the endangered Piping Plover (nationally significant). Globally or
nationally significant means threshold numbers are at least 1% of the
global population or national population of a given adult population
found at a site.
