OEN
KENNEDY: Oen is a first-rate guitarist (and fine piano
player) with a unique voice and melodies which are intricate and
yet instantly accessible. Oen is perhaps best known for his many
wonderful songs about birds, but his pallet is considerably wider
than that and his songs demonstrate a remarkable ability to
convey the magic and wonder of nature, childhood, love, and the
human spirit.”

MURRAY
NEWELL - Newellton, Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia
Murray Newell started birding on
his own around 1985 and began recording down the few species he
knew at the time. "I
liked it a lot," Murray says, " but couldn’t identify
many species. Shorebirds were my favourite and they all looked
brown to me!"
At that time he didn’t know
anyone else that birded or even that there was a Nova Scotia Bird
Society. He soon met other
birders as he went on the islands and around Cape Sable Island.
He then put a feeder down at friend Johnny Nickerson’s house
and told him what I was doing was 'birding' and soon he, too, was
hooked on the pastime.
Murray was given many bird and
birding books from fellow birder Joan Czapalay which helped him
identify birds more readily. "Time went on," Murray
adds, "and I knew I had to practise, practise,
practise. After a few years it got better.
Through the years he has met many
birders from places around the world away and they encouraged him
to do many more birding field trips. He still enjoys his hobby
"to the fullest!" |

Tucson, Arizona to begin her doctoral studies in education. There
she met the well known birder Kenn Kaufman, and participated in
the local Audubon Society. Joan has volunteered for Ducks

| DONNA
ENSOR - Ohio, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia
Birder Donna Ensor has been
birding for the past 20 years or so, mainly thanks to her mother
Sylvia Bower, who encouraged her to see and find out everything
she could about everything round her.
For Donna, this includes flowers,
trees, ferns, butterfies and more. She is aware of the local
haunts for birds in winter and where they nest and raise their
young in spring. She has participated in dozens of Christmas Bird
Counts, NAMC, Bird Studies Canada reports, owling reports and
leads bird outings for the Nova Scotia Bird Society.
She thinks the South Shore of Nova
Scotia is a great place to meet new friends and exciting birds. |

JOHNNY
NICKERSON - Lower Clark' s Harbour
Johnny started birding about 1990,
when friend and neighbor Murray Newell also got the "birding
bug" . His
wife Sandra then became interested in watching the feeders in the
yard and they soon began birding jaunts together.
Within the first month, they had
their first rare bird sighting. Birders Joan Czapalay and Blake
Maybank got them connected to and involved with other bird
watchers and birders in Nova scotia.
Johnny really enjoys taking
birdwatchers around the Cape Sable Island area, showing them the
local birds and maybe "life list" birds for his guests.
He specializes in shorebirds. |
