Cruise Ships Coming to Shelburne Port

Discover Shelburne County, Town of Shelburne, Municipality of Shelburne and the Development Authority have all been in talks with Tourism Nova Scotia and the Atlantic Canada Cruise Association about the possibility of Cruise ships coming into the port of Shelburne. Meetings will continue about preparing the port, creating excursions for the passengers and hiring someone to prepare and develop all this information. If plans stay on track Shelburne could be welcoming cruise small ships by 2010!  Stay posted to DSCTA meetings for more updates.

Tourism Coordinator
Discover Shelburne County has been meeting with the 5 municipal units and South West Shore Development Authority to talk about getting some funding to hire a tourism coordinator for Shelburne County. Everyone has been meeting since February. To date there is an agreement between four units to support the funding of this position as well as in kind donations from the Development Authority. At the June 5 meeting it was decided to approach ACOA about finding some funding for the first year of the position to get the ball rolling. This ACOA proposal will help create a plan for the tourism position outlining responsibilities and duties. With this outline councils will be better able to define an amount which they can contribute towards funding the position. The plan is to have a tourism coordinator position in place for no less than five years.

Another Saltscapes Show a Success

Discover Shelburne County attended the 2008 Saltscapes show this April 25 to 27. I, Shannon Crowell, worked the booth while "Loyalist Landing people" from the Redgimend dressed the part and walked the show handing out Loyalist Landing flyers. To conclude, the show gets bigger every year and is attended by more people every year. This year the weather cooperated by making it not nice enough to stay outside but nice enough to venture out (meaning no snow but we came close). Friday show was jam packed with people as was Saturdays, which was to be expected. The Tourism Nova Scotia booth kept running out of Doers and Dreamers as well as other media they were handing out. The Saltscapes Expo ran out of bags they were handing out to participants on Sunday meaning the show far exceeded their number estimates.
As for the Discover Shelburne County Booth, we were located inside the Nova Scotia Pavilion, which in my opinion was a great place to be. The pavilion was a part of the show floor reserved by Tourism Nova Scotia. It was sectioned off and decorated in a Nova Scotia theme creating an "atmosphere" which was impressive. All the booths inside were from areas around Nova Scotia. The only complaint is that the booth space DSCTA actually had was about 1/3 of what was expected. The two booths next to ours, The Bluenose Coast and Liverpool had the same opinion. So we all worked together sharing the space and compromised on what our vision for the booth was.
Once the everyone figured out how to present our info in the space we were given the show was off to a rolling start and continued all day Friday. The participants packed in and were impressed with our pavilion. In the centre of our pavilion was a sound stage were different  live music was played all weekend. On Saturday the Loyalist Landing dancers performed a dance.
DSCTA booth was located right next to the Tourism Nova Scotia booth which always drew a crowd collected the famous Doers and Dreamers guide, Nova Scotia maps and Festivals and events guide. Features of the DSCTA booth included a free draw for 3 different accommodations, thank you Boulder cove cottages, Water Street Lighthouse B&B and Whispering Waves Cottages. Also a brochure rack with all those businesses who participated, and a slide show of all members businesses and festivals from around Shelburne County. Almost all the brochures were handed out as well as the new Shelburne County Guides. Many participants liked picking up one thing and that was the guide.
It is important for Shelburne County businesses to realize what an opportunity it is to have some part of this show as it is a BIG draw to the Halifax market. I would like to thank all those businesses who participated in this years show and I hope to see you all next year!
